The energy performance certificate is part of a government initiative to improve the energy efficiency of properties.
It is important to note that although Home Information Packs have recently been suspended, an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) still needs to be commissioned before a property is put on the market. See our EPC FAQs for more information.
Buildings produce nearly half of the UK's carbon emissions. That's almost twice that of cars and planes! The way a building is constructed, insulated, heated and ventilated and the type of fuel used, all contribute to its carbon emissions.
The Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) contains an energy efficiency rating which ranges from 'A' to 'G'. 'A' being the most energy efficient and 'G' being the least, with the average up to now being 'D'.
Alongside the EPC, energy assessors provide information suggesting how to further improve the energy efficiency of the property.This makes it easier for people to make a more informed decision relating to the energy efficiency of a property and the on going costs of fuel.
Public buildings now also have to be assessed for their energy efficiency and their Display Energy Certificate (DEC) must be placed in a prominent position within the building for all visitors to see.
